During Menelik’s campaign to unify Ethiopia, the following rebel dignitaries were held prisoner at Ankober:

 
 
  • King Tona, of Wolayta in southern Ethiopia
  • King Tchinito, of Kaffa in western Ethiopia
  • Ras Wolie Betul, of Yeju in north-central Ethiopia
  • Ras Hailu Teklehaymanot, of Gojjam in central Ethiopia
  • Ras Mengesha Yohannes, of Tigray in northern Ethiopia
  • Dejach Tayye Gulilat, of Kaffa in western Ethiopia
